Tre Bacili ****

The name of this 6-room property is a nod to the owner’s noble family’s crest which includes 3 basins (Tre Bacili in Italian). Located in the small town of Spongano in the province of Lecce, it is positioned to offer its guests an experience of natural landscapes, crystal blue seas and villages with Baroque art and architecture.

An array of experiences can be had from here; short drives to Galatina, a town of Greek origin and home of the beautifully frescoed Santa Caterina, beautiful Baroque Lecce, and Otranto, Italy’s easternmost town and a highlight of the Puglia region with its seaside location, Romanesque cathedral and excellent fish restaurants are easy excursions. For nature lovers, private boat trips for swimming and exploring the grottoes that dot the nearby coastline, Punto Palascia (Capo d”Otranto) offers rocky shores and cliffs, stunning sea views and  lighthouses which make for great coastal walking, and I Laghi Alimini, with its wide range of flora and fauna, provides great birdwatching and sandy stretches of beach. This is also a renowned region of Italy for food and olive oil so excursions to olive oil mills, wineries cheesemakers and regional dining experiences are recommended.

Back at the hotel, relax by the pool in the shadow of the stone walls, and the bell tower of the local ancient church, arrange a cooking or yoga class and enjoy the understated elegance of your room.  Simplicity and luxury are combined with environmental sensitivity and sustainability. Contemporary decor and art seamlessly co-exist with Salento stone and the mansion whose construction began in the late 18th century.
